Alan Rousso

Alan Rousso is an executive and team coach and an international development consultant. As a coach, Alan helps clients achieve clarity and self-awareness that can unlock practical solutions to career and work-related issues. He works with senior leaders, high-potential mid-career professionals and teams. As an international development consultant, Alan works with individuals and teams in multilateral development organisations, companies and non-profits to find and deploy innovative solutions to financing for development, conducting political economy analysis and strategic planning.

In both areas of his practice, Alan draws on his 30 years of international professional experience as an academic, researcher, team leader and senior executive in development finance. This experience as a senior leader managing diverse teams and transforming organisations, combined with his expertise in international development and strategy, makes Alan uniquely qualified to understand his clients’ needs and support them in reaching their goals.

Having developed leaders as both a manager and coach, and led teams through stages of start up to maturity and transition, Alan has the kind of experience that can help others reach the next stage in their career and go from good to great. Alan works with leaders and teams who:

  • Are managing through a period of crisis, change or uncertainty

  • Want to increase engagement, motivation and effective communication

  • Aim to foster a team or corporate culture that promotes sustainability and embraces Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) principles

Clients refer to Alan’s “wealth of experience, listening skills, ability to focus on fundamentals of the problem and help find practical solutions”. One recent client remarked on the ‘lightbulb’ moments experienced when being coached by Alan: “after listening carefully in our discussions, he perfectly captured the sentiment of the issue and provided a perspective that gave me new ways to think around the subjects I wanted to resolve”. Clients and colleagues describe Alan’s style as “productive, helpful, warm, reassuring, mind-opening and clarifying”. With a “gravitas and authority that comes from experience”, combined with “authenticity” one client commented that “Alan helped me to focus on the importance of my own calm authority”.

Prior to moving full-time into executive and team coaching and consulting, Alan worked for over two decades at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London, the last 10 as a Managing Director, leading international teams varying in size from 20 to 200. Before moving to London in 2001, Alan lived in Russia and was head of the Carnegie Moscow Center, a think tank and public policy research organisation, leading a team of 40 Russian colleagues. He began his career in academia in the US, teaching on the faculties of Dartmouth College, Cornell University and Columbia University.

Alan has written extensively on issues of trust, democratic transition and corruption. He is a highly regarded speaker and facilitator, and has delivered expert commentary on public and international affairs at major media outlets in the US, UK and Europe. Alan has also provided business consulting to top financial firms across the globe. Alan holds an M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University. He has trained as an individual Executive Coach at Hult Ashridge and a Systemic Team Coach at the Academy of Executive Coaching.

Alan is a dual US-UK national who calls London home. He has been married for more than 30 years and has two grown children. Alan is an enthusiastic home cook and has completed a 12-week Certificate Course at the acclaimed Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland. With his insights into food and the hospitality industry, a portion of Alan's coaching work is dedicated to clients working in the restaurant and catering business, food suppliers and retail outlets, cookery schools and other related fields.
